Choke manifold is an assembly of high-pressure valves and fittings used in oil and gas industry. Primary purpose of choke manifold is controlling (opening and closing) of well stream, as well as lowering or adjusting its pressure during oilfield operation. The main components of choke manifold are adjustable or/and positive chokes, high-pressure valves, and fittings that are mounted on the skid. Choke manifold is designed considering oilfield conditions, such as production rate, ambient and working temperatures, well pressure, and composition of flow. Design standard for choke manifold varies from country to country. However, the most referred standard is API 6A and API 16C. If choke manifold is used in areas with high presence of sour gases, sour service or stainless-steel materials are used during choke manifold manufacturing. Materials class of choke manifold are regulated by existing standards. NACE MR0175 or ISO 15156 are two commonly used requirements for materials that used in equipment with high exposure to H2S. Skid that accommodates all necessary components of choke manifold is either proposed by supplier or custom-made based on the requirements of the client. Some areas with space and weight limits, like offshore platforms, have very strict requirements to the skid of choke manifold. In oilfield, the commonly used choke manifolds are either 4-valve manifold or 5-valve manifold. Choke manifold has dual path that allows operator perform changes in one choke, while not interfering with normal operation.
Depending on the requirements of operator, choke manifold is designed either two fixed chokes or two adjustable chokes, while some prefer using mix of adjustable and positive chokes in one manifold.
Adjustable choke is another kind of chokes, which allow the choke size to varied more easily. As positive choke, adjustable choke is used to control the production, perhaps to prevent sand production or to maintain the most efficient rate for the well. The choke restricts the area available for flow through a beam or orifice of a specified diameter that must be inserted into the choke body. The smaller the diameter of the beam the lower the production rate.
